It gives an awesome background to the beginnings of Bigfoot, with interviews of it’s creators, etc. The segments are short enough that it doesn’t lose the interest of my toddler. It shows some vintage footage, I’m happy with the purchase and recommend it!

My boys like monster trucks. They enjoyed watching this video very much and would watch it daily if I would let them. It gives some history of the development of and some construction details on these trucks. So, I would recommend it for boys.

One of the most winning and intelligent romantic comedies of the ’90s, Shakespeare in Love is filled with such good will, sunny romance, snappy one-liners, and devilish cleverness that it’s absolutely irresistible. At the 1999 Academy Awards, this dark-horse costume comedy sneaked off with seven Oscars, besting the highly favored Saving Private Ryan for Best Picture. With tongu placed firmly in cheek, at its outset the film tracks young Will Shakespeare’s overwrought battle with writer’s block and the efforts of theater owner Philip Henslowe (Geoffrey Rush, in rare form) to stage Will’s latest comedy, Romeo and Ethel, the Pirate’s Daughter. Most of the jokes in the first one-third of the film are along these lines: Will’s anachronistic therapist session, a mug inscribed “A Souvenir from Stratford-Upon-Avon,” Henslowe’s battles to pay off his debts, and the backstage high jinks of pre-production. However, once Will sets his eyes on the beautiful Viola De Lesseps (Gwyneth Paltrow), joking takes a backseat to ravishing romance. Well, almost–turns out Viola wants to break into the world of male-only theater, and disguises herself as a young man to wangle herself an audition. She wins the part of Romeo and, after much misunderstanding, the playwright’s heart. Soon enough, Will’s pirate comedy becomes a beautiful, tragic romance, and Ethel is shoved aside for a woman named Juliet. Will and Viola’s romance, however, is equal parts comedy and tragedy–he’s married, and she’s betrothed to the slimy Lord Wessex (Colin Firth), and it doesn’t take an English major to figure out that it’s not all’s well that ends well.

Like Shakespeare’s work itself, the film is instantly accessible to everyone, from the raucous groundlings looking for low comedy to the aesthetes hankering for some intellectual bite behind their entertainment. The way that Oscar-winning screenwriters Marc Norman and Tom Stoppard enfold their story within the parameters of Romeo and Juliet (and even Twelfth Night) is nothing short of brilliant–it would take a Shakespearean scholar to dissect the innumerable parallels, oft-quoted lines, plot developments, and thematic borrowings. And most amazingly, Norman and Stoppard haven’t forgotten to entertain their audience in addition to riding a Shakespearean roller coaster. Director John Madden (Mrs. Brown) reigns in his huge ensemble with a rollicking energy that keeps the film’s momentum going at top speed for its entire two hours. Along the way there are small gems to be found: Ben Affleck’s riotous egotistical actor, Imelda Staunton’s nimble nurse, and of course Judi Dench’s eight-minute, Oscar-winning turn as a truly regal QUn Elizabeth. However, the key element of Shakespeare in Love’s success rests on the milky-white shoulders of its two stars. Fiennes, inexplicably overlooked at Oscar time, is a dashing Will as we might expect him at the early stage of his career, bundled full of comedy and tragedy but unsure of how to harness his talent. And as for Best Actress winner Paltrow… well, nothing she’d done before could have prepared viewers for how amazing she is here. Breathtakingly beautiful, fiercely intelligent, strong-willed, and lovestruck–it’s a performance worthy of Shakespeare in more ways than one. This DVD preserves the justly distinguished production of Rossini’s ‘The Barber of Seville’ done in the jewel-box theater of the Schwetzingen Festival in 1988. It features the adorable Rosina of Cecilia Bartoli at the beginning of her soon-to-be-huge international career. It is conducted sympathetically by the Sicilian Gabriele Ferro; he leads the Radio Symphony Orchestra of Stuttgart and the chorus of the Cologne City Opera.

The staging by Michael Hampe, sets by Ezio Frigerio and costumes by Mauro Pagano are weak and do not win in the design of a straightforward presentation of Rossini’s still-funny farce.

David Kuebler’s Almaviva is beautifully sung and his laughable acting as the drunken soldier in Act I and as the fallacious Don Alonso in Act II is expertly done. The lecherous but clueless Don Bartolo is sung and acted by the obsolete Carlos Feller. His downfall in the finale is done with grace and wonderful humor, unlike some Bartolos who huff and puff rather too powerful about it all. Don Basilio is taken by the fabulous Robert Lloyd whose cavernous shaded bass is perfect for ‘La Calunnia’ which is both dismal and comic. He has a funny bit that he does with making the notice of the ghastly that has the audience in stitches.

Gino Quilico deserves especial praise for his scheming charmer, the barber Figaro. Not only is his singing fabulous, his laughable acting is station on. I laughed out loud several times–as when he is shaving Don Bartolo in the second act.

This production follows hard on the heels of the fantastic Arthaus/Naxos DVD of the 1990 Schwetzingen production of Britten’s ‘The Turn of the Screw.’ If these two productions are any indication of the level of artistry at Schwetzingen, one can certainly hope that we’ll be getting more of these productions on DVD.

I disapprove to sound arrogant myself by saying this, but I assume you should ignore the arrogant comments of the previous reviewer. If this production is “handsome disappointing,” then I’m Kirsten Flagstad. The previous reviewer’s comments are a perfect illustration of why opera fans have the reputation of being the most staid, humorless fault-finders around: for being almost impossible to please. I agree that one can always quibble about a few things in any production. In this case, yes, Carlos Feller’s performance is not flawless: his enunciation does scramble a bit in “A un dottor.” But he makes the number so exquisite overall, overall he is so terrifically pompous and ghastly, and he sings with such gusto (for an ragged man, I believe his allege is deep and strong, hardly “hollow”) that to call him the “fear” of the whole production is, in my view, puzzlingly peevish. And the same goes for any major criticism of the rest of the cast.

In fact, I judge this is one of the better casts I’ve seen in this opera. David Kuebler is a hilarious and wildly clear Count (his turn as the drunken soldier looking for lodgings is a riot) ; I don’t eye how anyone in their legal mind could think him a “listless, stern presence” and “charmless.” Factual, it’s splendid to say that Bartoli has gone on to do even better work than she does here, but, after all, this “Barber” was filmed in 1988, early in her career, and one can at least peep why her career took off after this. Her Rosina is appealing and absolutely irresistible, her dispute is ravishing, and her large coloratura number (”Una voce poco fa”) lovely spectacular. Gino Quilco is a expansive Figaro, very humorous, interesting, and energetic, with an favorable rendition of “Largo al factotum.” Also deserving praise is Robert Lloyd’s wryly imperfect Don Basilio. Lloyd earns the loudest applause in the whole performance, including many shouts of “Bravo,” for a terrific “La calunnia.”

And who could forget the conductor Gabriele Ferro, leaing the Radio Symphony Orchestra of Stuttgart down in the pit. Honest watching him conduct the overture is almost worth the notice of the DVD. Talk about chewing the scenery! His intensity and wild shaking and gesturing (reminding one of a Middle American snake-handler feeling the spirit) will leave your jaw hanging originate and may fabricate you laugh more than anything in the opera. Ferro is so caught up in the music that his beat doesn’t seem the most real and his cues to the orchestra members don’t discover all that suitable, but you can’t call him tiring,. Even if you can imagine why his career hasn’t exactly skyrocketed, you have to like him here.

All in all, this is the best of the five versions of “The Barber of Seville” that I’ve seen on DVD. Any review that does not recommend this production ought to be dismissed. I impartial grabbed my copy of classical-music connoisseur Phil Goulding’s book “Imprint to the Opera,” and I was looking to inspect which video version of “Barber” Goulding recommends. Can you guess? This one.

Jeannie (Barbara Eden) is even more fetching in color in the second season of one of TV’s most charming and endearing fantasies. Jeannie’s navel is still not ready for prime time, and her live-in relationship with astronaut Tony Nelson (Larry Hagman), the man who freed her from that bottle, is still strictly platonic. But, like any wife, she is upset when Tony forgets their one-year anniversary in the season opener. And when Tony unwittingly frees the Blu Djinn, who originally imprisoned Jeannie, it looks like he won’t survive year two. Naturally, being stuck in a bottle for 2,000 years, the vivacious and playful Jeannie is more innocent and naive than her bewitching counterpart, Samantha Stevens. Her well-intentioned magic complicates Tony’s life in such episodes as “My Master, the Rich Tycoon,” “My Master, the Rainmaker” and “My Master, the Spy.” She transforms Tony into an operatic virtuoso in “My Master, the Great Caruso,” landing him in a talent show, and leading to perhaps the most versatile lip-syncing scene since the Stooges sang the sextet from Lucia in Micro-Phonies. Jeannie blinks Tony back into the Old West in “Fastest Gun in the East,” on Captain Kidd’s ship in “My Master, the Pirate,” and back to Napoleon’s court in “My Master, Napoleon’s Buddy.” No wonder that in “There Goes the Best Genie I Ever Had,” he considers taking advantage of Hajii Day and sending her back.

Not that there aren’t advantages to having a genie around the house. In one episode, she anticipates TiVo by freezing the action on a televised football game while she and Tony go out. In “The Greatest Invention in the World,” she fulfills Tony’s best friend Roger’s (Bill Daily) childhood wish to be the funniest man in the world by turning him into the one and only Groucho Marx. And when Tony is put in charge of providing entertainment for General Peterson’s anniversary party, Jeannie summons “The Greatest Entertainer in the World,” Sammy Davis Jr. (at his konk-ch-konk best). The season’s most captivating story arc begins in the two-parter “The Girl Who Never Had a Birthday,” as Tony and Roger resolve to determine Jeannie’s birthday (the date is finally revealed in “Caruso”). Through it all, poor base psychiatrist Dr. Bellows (Hayden Rorke) is constantly confounded, Mrs. Kravitz-style, by the unexplained supernatural behavior to which he is witness. I Dream of Jeannie is far from PC, but in the realm of TV’s guilty pleasures, it is master of its domain. –Donald Liebenson
